Whilst most people see having a part-time job as a chore, there are plenty of people who have one whilst at uni. From being a student ambassador to working in the catering department, working on the farm, in local pubs/restaurants/farms and shops can all be a great way to meet people not only from Harper but the surrounding area.
A lot of friends are made through halls, clubs and courses - If like me, your course is quite small, then it limits that aspect. Whilst being at Harper I have worked as a student ambassador, in the catering department, at an equine yard and at a local pub. In all of these, I have made friends that I otherwise wouldn't have met. From masters students, international students, and even just local people, all have been different from just making friends through my halls or course.
If you know you either need or want to get a job whilst at Harper, get in contact with Matthew in the catering department at Harper or Barry the bar manager - these are good starting points as they are on campus and have flexible hours. Becoming a student ambassador is another great way of being able to work flexibly, as you only sign up to events you can do - you can also become an online ambassador and help answer questions for potential new students - and current - as well as writing these blogs with anything you think is interesting or that others should know.
The next point of call would be pubs in the local area. The Fox, The Barley, Ozzies, The Swan, The Lamb and the Red House are all major pubs that hire students. But there are plenty of others so enquire within!
One final tip would be to join Facebook pages and look on websites - that's how I managed to get most of my jobs with horses. Even if it's just holiday cover, it's something!
